The game
Washington capped a 14–2 season in which it led the NFL with 485 points, finishing 17–2 overall, the most wins in franchise history. After a scoreless first quarter, a Chip Lohmiller field goal, Earnest Byner's 10-yard touchdown catch and Gerald Riggs's 1-yard run made it 17–0 at halftime. Kurt Gouveia intercepted Jim Kelly on Buffalo's first play of the second half and returned it to the 2, and Riggs scored 16 seconds into the third quarter. Mark Rypien threw for 292 yards and two touchdowns, including a 30-yard strike to Gary Clark, and was named MVP; the defense intercepted Kelly four times and held Thurman Thomas to 13 rushing yards. Joe Gibbs remains the only coach to win three Super Bowls with three different starting quarterbacks.
