The game

Washington, 8–1 in the strike-shortened 1982 season, won its first Super Bowl and first NFL title since 1942, ten years after losing Super Bowl VII to Miami. The Dolphins led 17–10 at halftime after Jimmy Cefalo's 76-yard touchdown catch and Fulton Walker's 98-yard kickoff return, the first kickoff-return touchdown in Super Bowl history. Trailing 17–13 with just over 10 minutes left, Washington went for it on fourth-and-1 at the Miami 43, and John Riggins broke Don McNeal's tackle for a 43-yard touchdown. Joe Theismann's 6-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Brown sealed it. Riggins was MVP with 166 rushing yards on 38 carries, both Super Bowl records at the time, and Washington ran for 276 yards.
